Team Trip: Parish Health and Wellness Certificate Program
Recently, our Director of Religious Education, Jennifer Black Bear and our Executive Secretary, Caroline DeCory recently participated in the Parish Health and Wellness Ministries Certificate Program through the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University Chicago, through the Catholic Extension. This program was held at the LUREC (Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus) in Woodstock, Illinois- about 50 miles North West of Chicago. Below is a story from Jennifer and Caroline about their trip! We are so excited they were able to attend and are grateful they can apply all they have learned here at the Mission!
We were required to prepare and submit a case study prior to our arrival in Chicago. The case study addressed challenges we face in the course of our normal work responsibility. We presented our case in a small group case study session.
We started our days at 7:30 a.m. and went until about 9 p.m. daily. We started our day with guiding scripture, prayer and goals for the day. We had intro to ministry, skills development, and small group work daily. We met so many people from different Dioceses’. We were excited to meet Father Steve Mitton, he celebrated Mass with us the last day. He knew our families from home and greeted everyone in our Lakota Language at the beginning of mass!
We were unique in the fact that we were the only Native Americans that attended! They were impressed with our Diocese, because we have an office of Native Ministry. It was a very enriching experience for both of us. We were able to share our experiences and learn from each other. We gained so much knowledge and made so many new friends with this experience. We are grateful and thankful to the Catholic Extension and Loyola University-Institute of Pastoral Studies for this opportunity.
