Religious Education
St. Francis
The Fr. Jones Religious Education Building is full again this year. Two hundred students come once a week for release time programs. Presently they serve K-5. Next year we will be able to take children in the sixth through eighth grade.
Rosebud
Caroling Stands is the director of the release time religious education for the town of Rosebud. She will have one hundred and fifty students in the program this year. The classes are K-5, however Caroline hopes to reach out to the middle school as well.
She has also begun classes in Wood to prepare children for baptism and first communion. Nothing has been done there for many years.
Spring Creek
The Spring Creek After School Building is completed. The building was blessed and dedicated on January 23. 2006. It provides space for help with homework, help with reading, religious education and Lakota Language. It sits on property rented from the public school. The students will be able to use the school gym and cafeteria facilities. There will be four people working on this program when it is fully operational.
Nativity School
The Feasibility study for the Nativity style school is completed. It is evident that people would support such a school and that it would be very helpful for the community.
St. Charles Church
The renovation of the Mission Church continues. The eight medallions at the top of the church are now recognizable. People can now admire the cleaned painting behind the main altar as well.
We replaced the concrete floor with a beautiful light colored tile. This really enhanced this old mission church.
Catholic Education
The study also insisted that people very much want to pass on their religious belief to the next generation. They stressed the importance religious education of youth as well as adult continuing education. In response to this desire we will offer a multifaceted approach to Religious Education.
Higher Education
St. Francis Mission offers scholarships to Lakota people who are willing to get degrees in areas that will further the evangelization efforts of the Mission, e.g. Theology with an emphasis in youth ministry or catechetics and are willing to work for the Mission for an agree upon period of time.
We are also exploring the possibility of using telecommunications to help people with bachelor degrees get their master's in theology and church ministry.
Youth Ministry
In addition to educational programs St. Francis Mission has developed programs that support the development of strong self-esteem and self-value. Two such programs are the Youth Employment Training Program and Body, Mind & Soul. The Y.E.T. program, as it is known locally, provides much needed work experience and the practice of work ethic by employing youth ages 13-17 in the various departments of St. Francis Mission during the summer months. Besides offering knowledge in unique areas such as Museum artifact preservation and DJ experience at Radio Station KINI, the program provides for other opportunities like CPR training and spiritual development.
Camp Body, Mind and Soul is a summer day camp experience offered to area children from the ages of 8-12. St. Francis Mission staff supervise Lakota high school volunteers working together with volunteers form Jesuit High Schools in Cincinnati and Fairfield to provide a day filled with crafts, sports and self development workshops all centered around the concept that each child is a gift from God and each has everything needed within themselves to become or succeed in whatever they choose to pursue!
KINI Radio
KINI Radio is owned and operated by St. Francis Mission. It broadcasts at 90,000 kilowatts on FM dial 96.1. The station reaches all of the Rosebud Reservation and a wide audience in South central South Dakota and North central Nebraska. As the voice of St. Francis Mission it offers avenues for evangelization, religious education, national news, reservation news, as well as musical entertainment.
Each morning there is a recovery spot that offers encouragement and a prayer for the day. The radio spot also informs people of the activities of both recovery centers on the reservation.
